 BIBLE STUDY
Zoom at 9am. Password 509
Here is the Bible study handout.
We will look at 2 Kings 4-9. It's an exciting time of chaos, rebellion, and bloodshed. Yet God still works through these wicked times to accomplish his purposes on earth.

PRAYER TIME/FELLOWSHIP -- EVERYBODY PLEASE JOIN US!!!
Meet on Zoom at 10am. Password 509. It takes about 20 minutes. It's nice to see everyone and have a chance to find out what's going on with others and pray for them.

WORSHIP SERVICE
Other options:
  • Trinity Lutheran in Clear Lake, SD, has a very traditional, standard service fully recorded with organ and vocals. This is live at 8am our time.
  • You can check out The Vine's worship here. An hour video. Nothing else needed.
  • Cross of Christ in Boise has services with music posted. A 30 minutes sermon with PDF bulletin and YouTube song options.
  • Illumine, the hip WELS franchise in Rock Hill, SC/Seattle. Several short videos, sort of like what I have, but much hipper.
  • One more: Southridge Church, formerly King of Kings, Kennewick.
  • dozens of other great options.

WORSHIP OPENING
Welcome everyone. It's time to worship God, so let's put aside planning and worrying and whatever might distract us, and spend the next few minutes focused on the Lord.

OPENING IN THE NAME OF THE TRINITY
Leader: We worship in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION
Leader
: "Beloved in the Lord: let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins to God our Father, asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness."

Speak along if you are able, or the leader can read and everyone agree in your hearts: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner.

(brief pause)

Leader: God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. In accord with his promise and by the authority he has given his church (John 20:23), I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
PRAYER FOR BLESSING ON WORSHIP
Leader
: "Be with us now as we gather in your name. Bless us through the hearing of your word. Give us hearts that are eager to believe what you promise and obey what you command, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, Amen."

SCRIPTURE READINGS
We will now look at the story of Gideon, a man whom God used to bring deliverance to his people during what might have been Israel's darkest days. YOU DON'T HAVE TO READ IT OUT LOUD, I WILL READ IT IN THE VIDEO BELOW.

FIRST READING:
For your reference:
James 1:2-18

2 Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. 3 For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. 4 So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.
5 If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking. 6 But when you ask him, be sure that your faith is in God alone. Do not waver, for a person with divided loyalty is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is blown and tossed by the wind. 7 Such people should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. 8 Their loyalty is divided between God and the world, and they are unstable in everything they do.
9 Believers who are poor have something to boast about, for God has honored them. 10 And those who are rich should boast that God has humbled them. They will fade away like a little flower in the field. 11 The hot sun rises and the grass withers; the little flower droops and falls, and its beauty fades away. In the same way, the rich will fade away with all of their achievements.
12 God blesses those who patiently endure testing and temptation. Afterward they will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him. 13 And remember, when you are being tempted, do not say, “God is tempting me.” God is never tempted to do wrong, and he never tempts anyone else. 14 Temptation comes from our own desires, which entice us and drag us away. 15 These desires give birth to sinful actions. And when sin is allowed to grow, it gives birth to death.
16 So don’t be misled, my dear brothers and sisters. 17 Whatever is good and perfect is a gift coming down to us from God our Father, who created all the lights in the heavens. He never changes or casts a shifting shadow. 18 He chose to give birth to us by giving us his true word. And we, out of all creation, became his prized possession.

We've got two hymn options. Both emphasize that we listen to God's Word. The first one emphasizes God's Word a little more, the second one emphasizes our response a little more. The one on the left is a little slower, the one on the right is by Koine. Both are from the hymnal/supplement.

SECOND READING:
For your reference:
Matthew 11:25-30
25 At that time Jesus prayed this prayer: “O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, thank you for hiding these things from those who think themselves wise and clever, and for revealing them to the childlike. 26 Yes, Father, it pleased you to do it this way!
27 “My Father has entrusted everything to me. No one truly knows the Son except the Father, and no one truly knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.”
28 Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.”

Philippians 4:6-9
6 Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. 7 Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.
8 And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. 9 Keep putting into practice all you learned and received from me—everything you heard from me and saw me doing. Then the God of peace will be with you.

The version on the left is with guitar, on the right with synthesizer:
CREED
For fun, try to recite it from memory. If you need help, click here.

OFFERING
At this time you may write a check and mail it church, as described on this page, which also tells you how to set up online giving. Thank you to all those who have kept giving!

Also, if you'd like to offer your time, there is still plenty of raking and other outdoor work to do at the church. Contact Jake Laete to get specific instructions, or start with areas closest to the building.

CONNECTION CARD SUBSTITUTE
Instead of a connection card, leave an encouraging comment on our Facebook page! Or call a friend from church. Perhaps say hello to some of our shut-in members on Facebook (Jean Johnson, Carol Taylor, and Christine Glardon all use Facebook).

PRAYER

Take a moment to ask for prayer requests.
  • Remember to include prayers of thanks and prayers asking for things, both for you and for others.
  • Remember to ask for spiritual blessings as well as physical blessings.
  • It is fine to have a short prayer. It doesn't need to sound super-fancy or ultra spiritual, just speak to God from the heart.
  • Bring these thanks and requests to God in your own way, then close
  • Leader: Lord we ask you to bless the following:
    • Steve Anson's recovery from a broken hip
    • Transitions for the Most and O'Haver families
    • Carolyn Ratz's healing of a broken wrist
    • Let this time of isolation be a time of spiritual growth for all of us at St. Matthew, and may we appreciate more the freedom we have to worship you together when this present crisis has passed
    • We ask that the coronavirus crisis would pass sooner rather than later for the sake of those who have trouble with lonliness and depression, as well as those who cannot participate in online worship.
    • Say the Lord's Prayer

BLESSING
Leader: May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with us all, now and always. Amen.

Optional last song. This is a good version of the blessing, from our hymnal supplement:
